Río de la Plata

Rafael and Josefa Andrés Lorenzo opened this basement restaurant in 1958, naming it for Josefa’s native Argentina. It became a favorite hangout for the bullfight crowd and those ubiquitous Americans, Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles. It remains a popular dining room for an artsy university crowd as well as curious tourists. Josefa’s daughter Paulina oversees the kitchen, making homey dishes like garlic soup, grilled sausages, or local trout with ham. If you hanker for Castilian dishes not available at most restaurants, consider the brains fried in batter or stewed kid with almonds.
