Rebuilt in 1759 after a fire destroyed the original building, the Iglesia San Francisco is Salta's most prominent postcard image. The terra-cotta facade, with its 53m (174-ft.) tower and tiered white pillars, was designed by architect Luis Giorgi. The belfry -- the tallest in the Americas -- holds the Campana de la Patria, a bronze bell made from the cannons used in the War of Independence's Battle of Salta. A small museum exhibits a variety of 17th- and 18th-century religious images.
