Grander and more upscale than the other resorts on the outskirts of San Antonio, La Cantera is a magnet for golfers, shoppers, lovers, girlfriends seeking a luxe getaway—and families who can afford it (along with a variety of kid-friendly features and programs, the resort’s partnership with BabyQuip means you can rent high-quality cribs, strollers, and other gear on-site). The setting is stunning, with rocky outcroppings and gorgeous views from a perch on one of the highest points in the San Antonio area; remnants of the limestone quarry on which the resort was built were incorporated into the four interconnected swimming pools and a dramatic waterfall. On-site are two championship golf courses—the PGA-tour favorite La Cantera course, a joint effort of Jay Moorish and Tom Weiskopf, and the newer Palmer course, named for its legendary designer—plus a golf academy. Signature restaurant, a creation of acclaimed San Antonio chef Andrew Weissman, offers some of the most elegant food and service in town, while the nearby Shops at La Cantera runs the upscale gamut, counting Apple, Neiman Marcus, and Tiffany among its tenants. The Loma de Vida Spa and Wellness has won awards galore for its natural settings and array of treatments and activities. With all that to enjoy, rooms are almost superfluous—but of course, they’re large and luxurious and understatedly elegant. For a full-out splurge, go for a casita with a private pool and patio.
