Hostal de la Gavina

Relive the heady days of Hollywood glamor at one of Spain’s most famous hotels. It opened in 1932 and has seen some high ol’ times since. Elizabeth Taylor, Ava Gardner, and Frank Sinatra were regulars in the 1950s and 60s, and it continues to attract soccer icons and pop stars.

The elegant property is a surprisingly secluded retreat on the often crowded—and not always elegant—Costa Brava. It sits on a small peninsula that juts out into the ocean, with beaches on two quiet bays. The core of the resort is a gleaming-white 1932 former private villa with a hint of Moorish style. It has been much refurbished over the years and these days oozes style with rich fabrics, antique furniture, and delightful architectural details. Superior rooms have a private balcony with some of the Costa Brava’s loveliest views, and there’s a huge saltwater swimming pool, spa and hammam. Dinner on the patio at the Candlelight Restaurant, by the French chef Romain Fornell, is the last word in romantic gourmet dining. Service is as immaculate as the manicured lawns.
