Magdalena Peninsula

On the tip of this sea-swept promontory, about 2km (1 1/4 miles) southeast of El Sardinero, you can hike along green cliffs and take in wide-ranging views that made it a logical place to establish the lighthouse, Faro de la Cerda. The peninsula is crowned by the Palacio de la Magdalena (tel. 94-220-30-84), a Tudor-revival summer palace built in 1912 for King Alfonso XIII and Queen Victoria Eugenie. It’s now mostly used as a conference hall, but some historic rooms have been restored. It’s open mid-June–mid-September Sat 10am–5pm, Sun 11am–1pm; mid–September–mid-June also Mon–Fri 11am–5pm; admission is 6.50€ adults, 4.50€ students and seniors, free for children under age 6.
