Museo de Arte Moderno y Contemporáneo de Santander y Cantabria

Following a major renovation, this museum has turned its focus to contemporary art, with the ground level featuring the best of its Spanish and international collections. Contemporary art by Cantabrian artists fills much of the next two levels, while the “Modern Art” collections (1863–1985) are on the upper levels. Some of the museum’s prize paintings by Goya, though no rival to work in Madrid’s Prado, can be found in Room 11 on the topmost floor.

Tip: The museum leads with its strength, and the collections become less compelling with each level you climb.

In the same building, the Biblioteca de Menéndez Pelayo (tel. 94-223-45-34), represents the personal 50,000-volume collection amassed by historian/writer Marcelino Menéndez y Pelayo (1856–1912), Santander’s illustrious man of letters.
