In a beautiful neoclassical building in the heart of old Santiago, this is the city’s premiere performing arts venue. The Ballet de Santiago, the National Symphony Orchestra, and visiting maestros from around the world (including Placido Domingo in July 2014) take the stage here. A fire in late 2013 damaged some storage areas backstage and a refurbishment is underway, but it won't affect the theater's schedule for 2014. Note that the calendar is thin during the summer months of January and February, when so many Santiago residents take their holidays. There are very good discounts for anyone under 35, part of an effort to attract younger audiences.
