Restaurants in Scheveningen
Scheveningen may be the place most obsessed with herring in this herring-obsessed land. On the first Saturday in June, fishing boats compete to land the season's first nieuwe haring (new herring) during the annual, colorful Vlaggetjesdag (Flag Day) event. The fresh-caught fish is considered a delicacy; it's eaten whole (minus the head and the tail!), or chopped with minced onion if you're squeamish. Year-round, the fish are pickled as maatjes. Buy herring from sidewalk vendors, beachfront fish stands, and trailers towed onto the beach.
