El Corral del Rey
Quiet, romantic and stylish, this lovely boutique hotel is one of my favorites. It's run by the Reids, a Spanish/English family who have heaps of experience in hospitality, and it really shows. The Corral is located in two converted 17th-century palace houses on either side of a tiny street a 10-minute walk from the main tourist area. The main house has nine bright and luxurious rooms located around a central patio. The interiors by designer Kuky Mora-Figueroa are a stylish blend of the old and new, with pastel shades, original wooden ceilings, and cool marble floors. Rooms feature all modern conveniences, with flat-screen plasma televisions, hi-fi systems, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are of high standard, too, with seriously good rain-showers. There's an attractive terrace on the roof for a spot of lounging, or a dip in the small plunge-pool. If you're really in the mood for romance, hire the penthouse across the street. It has its own private terrace with rooftop Jacuzzi and a bathtub with a window that offers views of the cathedral belltower. It's really very special. If you fancy a few days out of town, consider the Reid family's lovely Hacienda de San Rafael around an hour's drive south towards Jerez.
