Jones Beach

Concerts -- From June to August, the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater (tel. 888/706-7600 or 516/221-1000; www.jonesbeach.com) hosts the hottest outdoor music events around: The Dave Matthews Band, Marc Anthony, Cheap Trick, and The Killers all played here in 2009.

Golf -- A fun way to pass some time with a great view of the ocean is at the Pitch & Putt (tel. 516/785-1600; Apr-Nov), a par-3 course that's right next to the boardwalk and the Atlantic Ocean. Park in field 4 or 5. Cost is $7 per 18 holes; club rental is $2.

Nature -- The Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center, at the west end of Jones Beach Park (tel. 516/679-7254), houses educational exhibits, interactive activities, environmental displays, and video programs. Children can dig in a mystery bone discovery area, explore a section of a shipwreck, and see a butterfly garden, along with exhibits on the dunes and endangered species. It's open weekends year-round and Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 4pm from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
