Anchoring the action in Maho Bay, the island's biggest hotel is now an all-inclusive resort. But unlike sister hotel Sonesta Great Bay (which recently turned adults-only), the Sonesta Maho Beach welcomes families with open arms, offering a supervised Maho Bungalow Kids Club (ages 4–12) and plenty of kid-friendly water sports. It's got loads of adult-centric action as well, from Casino Royale, the island's largest, to a duty-free shopping village to a raft of happening bars and eateries. Activities are plentiful and ongoing, from beach barbecues to aerobics classes to nightly movie screenings in the lobby. The hotel sits on a large swath of landscaped beachfront property between the bay and the traffic-clogged coastal road. Just next door is the famed beach at Maho Bay, where low-flying jets roar perilously close to the sands on landing and takeoff. (And yes, sonic booms often rattle the resort throughout the day—although many are thrilled by the jet action.) If you like being in the center of the action, this hotel is for you: In addition to the buzz of on-site activities, you're steps away from Maho Bay shops, bars, and clubs. If you're a light sleeper, you might want to ask for a high room in the 10-story Sky Tower; these have been renovated and are quieter. For a big resort, upkeep and service are commendable, and rooms are undergoing constant renovation, but don't expect spacious layouts or luxurious touches.
