Built in 1925 and opened a year later, this elegant Spanish-style establishment has hosted everyone from Calvin Coolidge and Bill Clinton to Jimmy Stewart, Babe Ruth and Marilyn Monroe. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places. The resort’s History and High Tea tour, Thursday through Sunday from 2 to 4pm, is a fun way to learn the hotel’s storied past (including ghostly tales) while sipping tea and eating finger sandwiches. Dominating the northern part of downtown, the Vinoy overlooks Tampa Bay and is within walking distance of the Pier, Central Avenue, and other attractions, though it’s a 15 minute hike to the beach. All guest rooms offer the utmost in comfort and have been recently renovated. Many have views of the bay, but if you want a terrace that’s big enough for a chair, request the Tower Wing (balconies in the original wing only allow standing). Along with several eateries, the hotel has Old Florida lobby bar, 12 tennis courts, an 18-hole golf course (designed by Ron Garl), spa, and a large private marina.
