Friendly hosts Kathy and Michael Cull also run a restaurant, bar, and roast their own coffee onsite; guests receive a full breakfast. Most rooms have a pillow-top, queen-size bed and bathroom; some bathrooms have a Jacuzzi. Rates run $68 to $175 for a double.
If you don't mind traveling about 20 minutes from downtown and prefer a more retreat-oriented stay, there's no better spot than the lakefront estate Auberge-sur-lac Bed and Breakfast, 1672 South Lane Rd., Sudbury (tel. 705/522-5010; www.cyberbeach.net/asl). The foyer's cathedral ceiling makes a dramatic impression upon guests, and the common room, with fireplace and entertainment center, is a welcoming respite after a day of hiking, biking, skiing, or shopping. Take Highway 69 north and get off on South Land Rd. Doubles run $110 to $215.
