Downtown has several distinctive choices for travelers to rest their weary feet. The Radisson Hotel Downtown Sudbury, 85 Saint Anne Rd. (tel. 800/333-3333 or 705/675-1123; www.radisson.com), is the largest in the area and is close to all major attractions. Guests can use their fitness center, the indoor pool, and get free parking, too. It was recently renovated and most rooms now feature Sleep Number beds, where you can control the firmness of the mattress with a remote; ask for an upgraded room. Business class rooms have a high-speed Internet connection, work desk, fridge and microwave. Doubles run $116 to $136, Canadian. Elsewhere downtown, the small (only 42 rooms) but centrally located Best Western 151 Larch St. (tel. 866/SUDBURY or 705/673-7801; www.bestwestern.sudbury.com), offers decent-sized rooms, modern d├ęcor, and a location within easy walking distance of Science North and Bell Park. Onsite fitness center, free parking and Internet connections are standard; kids stay free. Rates run $89 to $125 double.

Parker House Inn, 259 Elm St. (tel. 705/674-2442; www.bbcanada.com/sudburyparkerhouse), is a country inn within the confines of a city, and its seven rooms are spread out among three restored older homes with elegant furnishings. Friendly hosts Kathy and Michael Cull also run a restaurant, bar, and roast their own coffee onsite; guests receive a full breakfast. Most rooms have a pillow-top, queen-size bed and bathroom; some bathrooms have a Jacuzzi. Rates run $68 to $175 for a double.

If you don't mind traveling about 20 minutes from downtown and prefer a more retreat-oriented stay, there's no better spot than the lakefront estate Auberge-sur-lac Bed and Breakfast, 1672 South Lane Rd., Sudbury (tel. 705/522-5010; www.cyberbeach.net/asl). The foyer's cathedral ceiling makes a dramatic impression upon guests, and the common room, with fireplace and entertainment center, is a welcoming respite after a day of hiking, biking, skiing, or shopping. Take Highway 69 north and get off on South Land Rd. Doubles run $110 to $215.
