Maffei's is very small, with only 10 tables, but it serves some of the best fish in Taormina. Every day the chef selects the freshest fish at the market, and you simply tell him how you'd like it prepared. I often choose the house specialty, swordfish alla Messinese, braised with tomato sauce, black olives, and capers. The fritto misto (a mixed fry with calamari, shrimp, swordfish, and sea bream) is made superbly light by good-quality olive oil.
