Sabich Frishman

The menu at Sabich Frishman is simple: sabich or falafel. Sabich is a pillowy pita sandwich stuffed with fried eggplant, hard boiled eggs, and nutty tahini sauce. The dish is a mini history lesson: it had been a popular Shabbat morning meal among the Jewish community of Iraq and has had a massive revival, especially in recent years. The other side of the shop offers perfectly fried falafel. The condiments are an attraction in their own right, and, again an insight into the diverse, wonderfully harmonious forces that make up Israeli cuisine: Yemenite zhug spice, brilliantly colored pickles, and a tangy mango sauce known as “amba.” Eating here cane be a messy experience, and the bar stool seating at long black communal tables are not the most elegant, but that's part of the fun.
