Cinque Terre Residence

An air of relaxation reigns over this property set high above Riomaggiore. Accommodations at this B&B-style inn are simple but modern, with guest rooms distributed among adjoining houses on a terraced hillside. Each unit comes with its own panoramic patio or terrace partitioned by lemon trees (request a higher room for the best views), and some of the larger, apartment-like units have kitchenettes. Décor throughout is minimalist—though pastel bedding and tile floors add some coastal style and cheer—and rooms are kept spotless. Cinque Terre Residence is well removed from the tourist hubbub closer to the train station—and many who book here are seeking that separation—but the vibe isn't totally insular. There's definitely a communal feel to the place: Fellow guests end up congregating on each other's patios for sunset drinks and become Facebook friends, and the warm, hands-on staff will help you sort out your hiking plans and give you spot-on restaurant tips. Tech amenities are few at this inn, but free Wi-Fi and some international TV is available in a common breakfast room. Note that there is a bit of a schlep factor here. While almost anywhere you stay in the Cinque Terre involves some degree of quad burn, the tranquility at this particular inn is owed to its higher-than-average vertical displacement from town. When arriving with luggage, be sure to avail yourself of the municipal shuttle bus from the train station. Luggage cast off, it's just an, uh, invigorating 5-minute walk to or from town.
