Getting There

The Long Island Rail Road (tel. 516/822-LIRR) makes stops in Westhampton, Hampton Bays, Southampton, Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Amagansett, and Montauk. By car, take the Long Island Expressway to Riverhead (where it ends) and head south to Route 27, which takes you all the way out to Montauk. The Hampton Jitney (tel. 800/936-0440 or 631/283-4600; www.hamptonjitney.com) buses run daily. Pickup locations include Manhattan, LaGuardia, JFK, and Islip airports and several stops in the Hamptons. The complete route takes around 3 1/2 hours, but allow for traffic delays at peak travel times. Count on around $30 each way. The buses run by Hampton Luxury Liner (tel. 631/537-5800) have more room than other bus lines, with just 33 reclining leather captain's seats for $36 each way. But if money is no object, hop on an airplane and skip the traffic: MacArthur Airport (tel. 631/467-3210), situated mid-Long Island, is the closest airport. Viking Ferry (462 West Lake Dr., Montauk; tel. 631/668-5700) runs a passengers-only service between Montauk and Block Island, as well as New London, Connecticut, and Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts.
