One of the most popular activities in the High Tatras is to take the cable car to the top of the second-highest peak in the range, Lomnický Stít (2,634m/8,640 ft.). The lanovka, as the cable car is known, is located in Tatranská Lomnica, just to the left as you arrive on the road from Starý Smokovec. In addition to going to the peak, the cable car stops at two intermediate points, Skalnaté Pleso and Start. Skalnaté Pleso is a good departure point for mountain hikes, and Start offers a whole range of downhill adrenaline activities aimed at older kids and young adults, including riding downhill scooters and four-wheeled "Stanley riders." There's a restaurant at Skalnaté Pleso and a cafe, and even a small hotel at the top of Lomnický Stít. Get an early start as the lines at the ticket window can get very long. There's an information office next to the ticket window to help you sort out the various ticketing and price options. Be sure to bring a jacket or sweater along to the top. It's chilly up there, even in midsummer.
