Things To Do in The Island of Sylt

The Island of Sylt Shopping

Few other vacation destinations in Germany are as frenetic about clothing as Sylt. Garments are removed and put on again with abandon on this island with fickle weather and an extremely clothes-conscious population. You'll find impressive inventories of expensively casual clothing on Sylt -- items that are artfully simple, easy to don, easy to doff, and easy to look at. The island's best shopping streets are the Friedrichstrasse, in Westerland, and the Strönwai, in Kampen, both lined with boutiques associated with the great names of European fashion.

The Island of Sylt Nightlife

Disco Pony, Strönwai, in Kampen (tel. 04651/42182; www.pony-kampen.com), where both indoor and outdoor bar areas encompass views of the sea and the scrub-covered coastline that flanks it, mostly attracts a clientele under 40. There's no cover charge.

Also in Kampen is Disco Pony's major competitor, Club Rotes Kliff, Alte Dorfstrasse (tel. 04651/43400; www.club-rotes-kliff.de), distinguished by its hip but not necessarily young crowd. There's no cover charge.
