South Unit Trail

Petrified Forest Trail -- Pieces of petrified wood are scattered throughout this national park, but the greatest concentration can be reached only on foot or horseback along this trail, which leads up along Petrified Forest Plateau. Just don't take any souvenirs! 16 miles RT (from the east). Moderate. Access: You can get on the trail at the parking area at Peaceful Valley at the trail's eastern end; from the west, the trail head is at the end of a dirt road outside the park (ask park rangers for directions).

North Unit Trails

Achenbach Trail -- This route climbs from the river bottomlands up through the Achenbach Hills, drops down to the river again, climbs to the Oxbow Overlook on a spur trail, then returns along the river bottom to the campground. Before departing, ask a ranger about the condition of river crossings. The "spur" trail is the Sperati Point Trail described in "The North Unit" under Exploring the Area. 16 miles RT. Moderate. Access: Juniper Campground.

Buckhorn Trail -- About a mile into this loop, hikers discover a large prairie-dog town. Of the five varieties of prairie dogs, only the black-tailed variety inhabits Theodore Roosevelt National Park. 11 miles RT. Moderate. Access: From the Caprock-Coulee Nature Trail.
