When planning a trip to Frederick or a drive through the Civil War sites and on to Gettysburg, reserve some time for the treasures of Route 15, the Catoctin Mountain National Scenic Byway. Along the way, stop in Thurmont, known for its two main parks, and Emmitsburg, the home of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton and Mount St. Mary's University, where a replica of the Grotto of Lourdes is located. These are charming places for a weekend getaway or a day trip; both are about 90 minutes from Baltimore.
