Cathédrale St-Pierre et St-Paul
The spectacular stained-glass windows in this cathedral—180 of them—helped Troyes earn its nickname, the “Holy City of Stained Glass”. Arguably the building’s main claim to fame is that the Order of the Knights Templar was founded here in 1128/9 by St. Bernard of Clairvaux, whose remains are kept here in an exquisite reliquary casket. On Friday evenings in July and August, the cathedral stays open until 10pm to give visitors the chance to see the sumptuous patterns of colored light cast onto the cathedral’s stone through the stained-glass windows at sunset – a lovely sight, set to music.
