Things To Do in Tubingen

Tubingen Attractions

Standing on the Eberhardsbrücke over the Neckar River running through town, you'll see a long and narrow island in the river's center created with landfill. Nearby, locals enjoy the tree-shaded promenade Platanenallee, which fills with strollers in warm weather. From there, you get a panoramic view of the town, with its willows and houses reflected in the river. Towering above the other buildings is the Renaissance Schloss Hohentübingen (High-Tübingen Castle) now used by the university. It's worth climbing up to the castle for the dramatic view from the terraces.

The narrow streets of the Altstadt wind up and down the hillside, but they all seem to lead to Marktplatz, where festive markets are held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. You'll feel as if you're stepping into the past when you come upon country people selling fruit and vegetables in the open square. Facing the square is the Rathaus, which dates from 1435 but also has more recent additions, including the 19th-century painted designs on the facade.

On a hillside above Marktplatz is Stiftskirche, Holzmarkt, the former church of the Augustinians. The monastery became a Protestant seminary in 1548, and its church became the Collegiate Church. Inside, the tombs of the dukes of Württemberg in the chancel and the 15th-century French Gothic pulpit and rood screen are all noteworthy. The tower (enter on the left of the chancel) provides a panoramic view of the town. The church is open daily 9am to 5pm, whereas the chancel and tower are open Tuesday to Friday 10:30am to 5pm, and Saturday and Sunday 2 to 5pm. Admission to the tower is 2.50€ for adults and 2€ for children.

Hölderlinturm, Bursagasse 6 (tel. 07071/22040), lies at the end of a walk by the Neckar River. This was the home of the lyric poet Friedrich Hölderlin, who resided here with the Zimmer family from the onset of his mental illness at age 36 until his death in 1843, at age 73. Although Hölderlin is not well known outside Germany, try reading a few of his poems in translation before coming. Most tours of the museum are in German, but you can request one in English. The house is open Tuesday to Friday 10am to noon and 3 to 5pm, Saturday and Sunday 2 to 5pm. Admission is 2.50€ adults, 1.50€ students and children.

Tubingen Nightlife

Student-inspired nightlife makes this old town very young at heart. Just head into the Marktplatz at night and follow the sound of partying. You can order a beer and read the comics hanging on the walls of Marktschenke, Am Markt 11 (tel. 07071/22035), then join the students spilling outside into the square. Daily hours are 9am to 1am; Friday and Saturday it closes at 2am. Or start your evening in the ancient Boulanger, Collegiumsgasse 2 (tel. 07071/23345), where you could offer to pick up Hegel's bar tab, which has gone unpaid for more than 200 years. Ammerschlag, Ammergasse 13 (tel. 07071/51591; www.ammerschlag.de), is a cramped and smoky hole-in-the-wall dive that has live music one Sunday a month, ranging from blues to rap. Hours are daily 3pm until 1am.

Better suited for drinks and gossip than dancing is the cramped, but fun, hole-in-the-wall Blauer Turm Lounge, Friedrichstrasse 21 (tel. 07071/360390; www.blauer-turm-tuebingen.de), which is open Wednesday and Thursday from 8pm to 3am, Friday and Saturday from 9pm to 5am. Wednesday nights feature swing bands, and there are live DJs every Friday and Saturday night. Entrance is free.
