Lime Tree Bay Resort

Just one of two spots to stay in the tiny town of Layton (pop. 183) sits on a pretty piece of waterfront, midway between Islamorada and Marathon, graced by hundreds of palm trees and tropical foliage.  There are two pools, including one heated, a nice white sand beach, fishing pier, free use of kayaks, paddleboards, and tennis court. Staff is super friendly. Rooms have been upgraded with shiplap and requisite Caribbean-esque décor, some rooms have kitchenettes or full kitchens. Splurge for the waterfront rooms and avoid rooms that are “off property.” There are also efficiencies and townhouses for those looking for more room and comforts of home. Next door, The Florida Boy Bar and Grill is a popular locals’ hangout thanks to its Florida version of the New Orleans po’boy with grouper, and the ‘gator bites, which do taste like chicken. Rates include a good continental breakfast that goes beyond the typical and features hot dishes and eggs.
