Hotels in Valdez
The hotels listed in this guide are near the boat harbor and museums, so you may not need a car if you stay there. For the B&Bs, you probably will want transportation, as the walk is long.
Camping
The Bear Paw RV Park, 101 N. Harbor Dr. (www.bearpawrvpark.com; tel. 907/835-2530), is in the middle of town, next to the boat harbor. Full hookups are $35, tent sites $25 for two. The same operators offer an adult-only campground less than 2 blocks away, at 300 Wyatt Way, charging $40 for full hookups.
The best campground in the area is the state's Blueberry Lake Campground, 24 miles out of town on the Richardson Highway, just below Thompson Pass. The campground is above the tree line, with mountaintop views and access to limitless alpine hiking. It can be windy and cold. The small lake is stocked with trout. Twenty-four well-screened sites are $10 on a self-serve system. There are pit toilets. RVs are welcome, but there are no hookups.
