For something a bit different, you can stay in a small ecohotel in the nearby village of Ek Balam, close to the ruins, at Genesis Retreat Ek Balam (www.genesisretreat.com; tel. 985/858-9375; 488-599 pesos). The Canadian owner, Lee Christie, takes guests on village tours that unveil daily life for the contemporary Maya. She rents simple cabañas (with shared or private bathrooms) surrounding a lovely pool and a restaurant.
