Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art

How's this for a devotion to contemporary art: to make sure that it's always on the cutting edge, this museum doesn't collect art at all (though it does have a nifty Dale Chihuly chandelier that's permanent). Instead, it puts its energies into curating shows that best illuminate the current cultural zeitgeist. In 2014, that meant an exhibition of prints featuring such luminaries as Chuck Close, Sol Le Witt and Kara Walker. In the past, the museum has mounted shows with works from such up–and–coming names as Matt Eich and Wade Mickley. The Museum also has strong ties to the community, meaning it sponsors a number of classes lectures, kids activities and shows of local artists' works. Some program notes: On MOCA Tuesdays, the galleries are open 5 to 9pm free of charge. Audio tours by teens for teens are free on Thursdays. In the gardens surrounding the one-story museum are five modern sculptures, large works of steel and concrete, available for viewing even if there's no exhibition going on inside. The museum also hosts Virginia Beach's Boardwalk Art Show in June. The gift shop features the usual souvenirs, posters, books, and a consignment shop filled with work by local contemporary artists.
