Tautog's Restaurant at Winston's Cottage
If I stopped by a friend's beach cottage—a friend who could really cook—I'd want it to be like Tautog's. The greeting patrons guest is extremely warm, and the old cedar-shake house couldn't be more comfortable, whether you choose to sit in the dining rooms or on the lovely front porch. And it smells delicious. As for the food, it serves chicken a few different ways and a vegan dish or two, but those in the know go for the seafood: locally caught crabs, oysters, and fish in a number of different preparations (the variety comes from keeping dishes concocted by the last three chefs). Beyond the more creative fare, there are perfectly cooked traditional dishes, too: a wonderful she-crab soup with a hint of sherry, parsley-flecked crab cakes, steamed shrimp, and oysters Rockefeller. For those with lighter appetites (or wallets), sandwiches are always available, even late. There's room to park your car or your bike behind the restaurant. Next door, Doc Taylor's, a sister restaurant, is open daily 7am to 3pm for breakfast and lunch and opens Thursday evenings January through November with live music and cocktails. Doc's has its own website now (www.doctaylors.com).
