The 76 hectares (188 acres) classicist-style "Royal Baths" along the Royal Route is where the city's residents go for a stroll in good weather. Established in the 17th century, the park got its moniker from a bathhouse located here. King Stanisaw Poniatowski, the last king of Poland, acquired the property in 1764. No matter which entrance you take, the footpaths will lead you to the neoclassical Palace on the Water (Agrykoli 1; tel. 22/506-01-01; www.lazienki-krolewskie.pl), a royal summer residence and now a museum where you can view the king's private chambers and opulent baroque-style ballrooms. Or it's great just to spend time in the park and coax "Basia" (Barbara; the local pet name for squirrels) into nipping walnuts from your hands. Try to catch the piano recitals, held from May to September, in the rose garden, where a larger-than-life sculpture of Chopin is the centerpiece. The 45-minute free recitals are held Sunday at noon and 4pm. It's a great place to slow down, but keep off the grass.
