Restaurants in Westport
The notion of culinary excellence and innovation has yet to hit Westport, and if it's your first West Coast destination, it will give you the chance to get used to the West Coast dining style, which, at best, can be described as laid-back. Yellow House Café, 243 Palmerston St. (tel. 03/789-8765; www.yellowhousecafe.co.nz), is a casual stop serving good pasta dishes and a range of mains like sage- and Parmesan-crusted pork tenderloin or pan-fried beef fillet with roasted mushrooms, plus good vegetarian choices. It's open daily from noon to 9pm in summer; winter hours vary but are generally from 5 to 9pm daily. Everyone's favorite, The Bay House, has sadly shifted from its dramatic Jackson's Bay location to become The Town House, at Cobden and Palmerston streets, Westport (tel. 03/789-7133; www.thetownhouse.co.nz). It's the best dining in Westport and is open Monday through Wednesday 10am to 10pm, Thursday and Friday 10am to 1am, Saturday 8am to 1pm, and Sunday 8am to 4pm.
