Many hotels in the area offer half-board plans (with dinner) in addition to bed-and-breakfast rates; it may save you time and money if you take advantage of these. Fresh filets of haddock or cod are fried in a crispy batter and served with thick-cut fries. For good food in an even better atmosphere, stop by White Horse and Griffin, Church Street (tel. 01947/604857; http://whitehorseandgriffin.co.uk). While surrounded by the character of the 18th-century structure, you may enjoy pot-roasted pheasant with cider or crispy pork belly with a mustard sauce. Whitby cod is baked under a crust of crab and served on a bed of fresh spinach. The White Horse and Griffin also rents out 10 comfortable bedrooms, each with a private bathroom and TV, costing £65 a night in a double, including breakfast.
