For lower-priced sleeping options, many yeogwan are in the area north of the bus terminal. A few nicer and quieter yeogwan are also located around the main post office. There are also some motels near the central market, including the Wonju Tourist Hotel, 94-8 Namyang-dong, Samcheok-si (tel. 033/743-1241; www.wjhotel.co.kr), which has rooms going for W72,000 for doubles or singles, with a 20% discount if you book online. Suites start at W96,000. With both Western-style and ondol rooms, the 10% VAT and service charge are included in the price.

There are plenty of inns and minbak around Chiaksan -- most are located in the Guryong district, but there are a few in the Shillim area as well. The most upscale accommodation in the area is the Koresco Condominium, 539-1 Owon-li, Hoengseong-gun, Gangwon-do (tel. 033/343-8730).
