Although there are no famous dishes from Wonju, it is a good place to get sanchae bibimbap, since it's so close to Chiaksan. A good place that specializes in the rice dish is Unchae in Haenggu-dong (tel. 033/747-1993).

Spicy-seafood lovers will enjoy the Alaskan pollack at Hwangtae Haejang-gook, 865, Dangye-dong, Wonju-si (tel. 033/745-7722), which specializes in all things hwangtae, running W5,000 to W25,000 for a meal.

For an unusual experience try the mud roasted duck at the Hayan Jib Garden (White House Garden), 556-3 Botong-li, Jijeong-myeon, Wonju-si (tel. 033/732-4882). Supposedly very healthy for you, the duck is cooked for 2 1/2 hours with medicinal herbs and sweet rice. Be sure to call ahead since it takes them so long to prepare the tender bird. Another place that specializes in duck is Jandibat, Maeji-li, Heungeop-myeon, Wonju-si (tel. 033/762-4480), whose name means "grassy field."

Most of the restaurants around Chiaksan can be found in the Guryongsa district.
