Yarmouth, MA Attractions
Children tend to crave the "junk" we adults condemn, so they're likely to be enthralled by the rainy-day enticements of Route 28, which include trampolines, batting cages, pitch and putt, and bumper cars. Among the more enduringly appealing miniature golf courses clamoring for attention is Pirate's Cove, at 728 Main St./Rte. 28, South Yarmouth (tel. 508/394-6200; www.piratescove.net/location/9; daily 10am-10pm in season; closed Nov to mid-Apr), where the trap decor is strong on macabre humor and there are two 18-hole courses. A round is $8.50 for those 13 and older, $7.50 for children 12 and under.

Cape Cod Inflatable Park
A complete kids’ playland, this attraction combines three parks—the Inflatable Park, with all manner of items to jump and bounce on; the Challenge Zone, an obstacle course that includes ziplines and harder climbing attractions; and the H2O, a water park. Onsite is also an arcade and… Cultural Center of Cape Cod
In 2000, a group of Yarmouth residents set out to turn the decaying and abandoned Bass River Savings Bank in South Yarmouth into an arts and cultural center. They’ve transformed it into a happening year-round venue, with a succession of art exhibits in the center’s galleries,…- Museum
The Edward Gorey House
A museum that celebrates such a unique talent as the author/illustrator/playwright Edward Gorey should offer surprises, and this one, inside Gorey’s 200-year-old sea captain’s home, does just that. The house celebrates the author’s passion for collectibles—potato mashers and sea… - Museum
Whydah Pirate Museum
Billed as the world’s only pirate treasure available for viewing, these are the findings of local treasure hunter Barry Clifford. Back in the 1980s, Clifford found evidence of the 1717 wreck of the slave ship Whydah, off the beach in Wellfleet. (Research showed it had been captured… - Historic Site
Winslow Crocker House
The only property on the Cape currently preserved by the prestigious Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, this house, built around 1780, deserves every honor. Not only is it a lovely example of the shingled Georgian style, it's packed with outstanding antiques --… - Zoo/Aquarium
ZooQuarium
This slightly scruffy wildlife museum has made great strides in recent years toward blending entertainment with education. It's a little easier to enjoy the seal and sea lion show once you've been assured that the stars do, in fact, like performing. They have been trained with…
Yarmouth, MA Shopping
Driving Route 6A, the Old King's Highway, in Yarmouth Port, you'll pass a number of antiques stores and fine shops for the home. Unless you have children in tow, you may want to bypass Route 28 entirely and stay on the pretty north side of Yarmouth.
Books
The most colorful bookshop on the Cape (if not the whole East Coast) is Parnassus Books, 220 Rte. 6A (about 1/4 mile east of the town center), Yarmouth Port (tel. 508/362-6420). This jam-packed repository -- housed in an 1858 Swedenborgian church -- is the creation of Ben Muse, who has been collecting and selling vintage tomes since the 1960s. Relevant new stock, including the Cape-related reissues published by Parnassus Imprints, is offered alongside the older treasures. Don't expect much handholding on the part of the gruff proprietor. You'll earn his respect by knowing what you're looking for or, better yet, being willing to browse until it finds you. The outdoor racks, maintained on an honor system, are open 24 hours a day, for those who suffer from abibliophobia -- fear of lacking for reading material.
Gifts/Home Decor
The design approach at Peach Tree Designs, 173 Rte. 6A (in the center of town), Yarmouth Port (tel. 508/362-8317), is much more adventurous and eclectic. A bold hand is evident in the juxtaposition of disparate elements, from hunting prints to beribboned hats, model ships to hand-woven throws. The gift pickings are superlative as well -- especially if you're shopping for yourself.
