Founded in 1934 on a busy boulevard about half a mile from the
center of Aix, the showroom and factory of Santons Fouque, 65
cours Gambetta, route de Nice, RN7 (04-42-26-33-38), stocks the
largest assortment of santons (creche figures) in Aix. More
than 1,800 figurines are cast in terra-cotta, finished by hand,
then decorated with oil-based paint according to 18th-century
models. All the trades once practiced in medieval Provence are
represented--there are grizzled but awestruck shoemakers,
barrel makers, coppersmiths and ironsmiths, and ropå
makers, each poised to welcome the newborn Jesus. Depending on
size and complexity, figurines range from 5°F to
6,00°F ($8.50 to $1,020).
