Frommer's Review
Although it isn't at the level of the Kempinski or the Grand Hotel Esplanade, this well-managed hotel outranks such landmarks as the Berlin Hilton and the Steigenberger Berlin. Don't be surprised by its boxy exterior (ca. 1968) that rises immediately adjacent to the Europa Center. Inside, thanks to dozens of improvements, the setting is very comfortable and, at times, even opulent. The soundproof rooms range in size from medium to spacious. All have fine beds, superb lighting, quality carpeting, and conservatively traditional styling. Known as "new deluxe rooms," the most comfortable accommodations are on the third, fourth, and fifth floors. About 90 of the rooms, usually on the seventh and part of the sixth floor, are set aside for nonsmokers. Most bathrooms feature tub/shower combos. The glamorous in-house restaurant, First Floor, is the only gourmet deluxe restaurant in Berlin that's open every day for lunch and dinner. Families traveling upmarket will appreciate this hotel's proximity to the zoo, indoor and outdoor pools, and helpful family-friendly staff, as well as the fact that many of the rooms are spacious enough to accommodate extra beds. Children under 12 who share a room with their parents can stay with no extra charge.
