Frommer's Review
If you're a movie star and always stayed at the Hotel Adlon, at last you have an alternative choice if you like your living lush and plush. Rocco Forte hotels has taken an 1889 former central bank of old East Berlin and turned it into an exceptional five-star rated hotel, although the Adlon still reigns supreme. The renovation has been nothing short of spectacular -- the underground vault, for example, was turned into a swimming pool. If you get a front room, you'll be overlooking the famous square, Bebelplatz, where Nazis staged the famous book burning of 1933.
Most of the bedrooms rest under tall ceilings and are superbly contemporary with all the latest comforts. Most of the bathrooms offer separate walk-in showers and mosaic marble detailing. Cast-iron bathtubs, as in olden days, are used in the more traditionally furnished suites. Parioli, named after a section of Rome and featuring a Mediterranean cuisine, opens onto a large terrace for al fresco dining in summer. The grand Opera Court under a glazed ceiling is an idyllic spot for afternoon tea. The hotel also possesses one of the best spas in Berlin.
