Review of Clärchens BallhausThis landmark in old East Berlin has reemerged back to its original glory during the last decade. It became a legend, opening in 1913 right before "The Great War" and miraculously surviving until the end of World War II; Nazi officers once used the top floor (with a decadent mirrored ballroom) as a private club. After the war, part of it remained closed but its downstairs great ballroom remained open throughout the Cold War. Since 2005, the mirrored ballroom was reopened for the first time since WWII, and today a hot DJ and live bands rage through the night, with occasional tango dancers and the like -- even Johann Strauss music. Gypsy street musicians are a favorite. Everybody from Turks out for a night on the town to elderly East Berlin couples fill the joint. It's usually open from 7 to 11pm, but not every night, so call before heading here. Note: This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
