Frommer's Review
Serving some of the finest Basque food in the city since the 1950s, this restaurant is popular for business lunches or dinners, in spite of its often-rude staff. Specialties include fresh tuna in piquant tomato sauce, and a local ratatouille known as piperada. You can order veal cutlets cooked in port wine and finish with a mint-flavored fresh fruit cocktail. Matxinbenta contains three dining rooms, each with contemporary furniture, potted plants, and lots of exposed wood. It's a block north of the Gran Vía adjacent to Bilbao's most visible department store, El Corte Inglés.
