Returned to its former glory, this is the grande dame of all Bilbao hotels, long the leader before anyone ever heard of the Guggenheim Museum. Today you are likely to see such celebrities as Chelsea Clinton or Pierce Brosnan. In days of yore, it was Albert Einstein, Ernest Hemingway, or Ava Gardner. In the Civil War, the hotel was the seat of the Basque government. The lobby with its magnificent stained glass sets the 1919 style. The spacious guest rooms are the epitome of traditional style and taste, each with a luxurious bathroom with tub and shower.

The building has been declared a historic, artistic, and cultural monument. At the Artagan Restaurant, a classic Basque haute cuisine is served.
