In the Old Quarter, far removed from the impersonal, sleek, and commercial hotels of Bilbao, this beautifully restored town house with wooden beams and 19th-century stone floors is a good bet for those seeking an authentically old-fashioned experience (read: no air-conditioning). Adorning the walls are works of sculpture and scenes of historic Bilbao life. Two Basque sculptors, Jesus Chueca and Roberto Atance, handpicked the lighting and original furnishings. Even curators from famous museums, who could afford four- or five-star luxury, book here for the best deal in town. For sheer friendliness, personality, and charisma, this cozy nest has no equal. One downside: The front rooms tend to be noisy.
