Active Pursuits

There are tennis courts at the university stadium and at the Clube Ténis de Coimbra, Avenida Urbano Duarte, Quinta da Estrela (tel. 23/940-34-69; www.clubeteniscoimbra.com). All are open to the public and cost 7€ to 9€ per hour; call ahead to reserve a court. For horseback riding or excursions in the Beiras, contact Centre Hippique de Coimbra, Mata do Choupal (tel. 23/983-76-95), open daily 10am to 1pm and 3 to 7pm. A 1 1/2 to 2-hour excursion along country trails costs 15€ per person.

For swimming, head to the trio of pools at the Piscina Municipal, Rua Dom Manuel I (tel. 23/979-66-20). Take bus no. 5 or 7 from the center. Open daily from 9am to 7pm, it charges 5€ admission.
