If you're looking for silver jewelry or souvenirs, go no farther than the town's coastal avenue, Rafael Melgar. Along this road, you find one store after another -- jewelry, souvenirs, and duty-free merchandise. But if you're looking for something original, seek out a gallery and store called Inspiración (tel. 987/869-8293), on Avenida 5 between Rosado Salas and Calle 3. Owner Dianne Hartwig displays the creations of some of the best-known folk artists in the Yucatán -- objects that are very hard to come by if you don't actually go the villages where many of these artists live. She also represents some talented contemporary local artists. Stores carrying Mexican handicrafts include Los Cinco Soles (tel. 987/872-2040), Indigo (tel. 987/872-1076), and Viva México (tel. 987/872-5466). All of these are on Avenida Rafael Melgar. There are also some import/export stores in the Punta Langosta Shopping Center in the southern part of town in front of the cruise-ship pier. Prices for serapes, T-shirts, and the like are lower on the side streets off Avenida Melgar.
