An extensive makeover after Hurricane Wilma has made this almost an entirely new property. It was already the best property on the island; now, after $25 million and more than a year of being closed, it has reopened as one of the best properties in the Yucatán. Palatial in scale and modern in style, the Presidente spreads out across a long stretch of coast with only distant hotels for neighbors. The rooms have all been redesigned top to bottom, and the smallest rooms were eliminated. Another pool has been added with a larger pool area. Rooms come in three categories depending mostly on location -- pool-view, oceanview, and beachfront. A few differences exist in amenities and the design of the rooms, but these are minor. All come with such offerings as a pillow menu. All units are decorated in a sleek modern style that incorporates tropical, even rustic, materials. A terrace or a balcony offers the indoor/outdoor mix that's so enjoyable in a beach hotel. Downstairs rooms are beachfront, ocean suites, and reef rooms (larger and practically right up to the water), upstairs are oceanview. Pool-view rooms can be either. Rooms are oversize and have large, beautifully finished bathrooms. A long stretch of sandy beach area dotted with palapas and palm trees fronts the entire hotel. This property is now a member of Leading Hotels of the World.
