Frommer's Review

Dubrovnik's Dominican Monastery is off a narrow passageway behind the Sponza Palace leading to the Ploce Gate. The monastery was built in the 14th century with the help of the Ragusa government and many local and foreign craftsmen, who positioned it against the city wall to strengthen the ramparts' northeastern flank. An impressive stairway leads to the Dominican's church doorway, decorated with a statue of St. Dominic; the door opens to the 15th-century Gothic cloister designed by Maso di Bartolomeo. The monastery's rooms circle the cloister, whose graceful triple arches frame a garden heady with Mediterranean plantings; an ancient well lies in the center. But architecture aside, the real reason to visit is the museum, which holds some fine religious art from Dubrovnik and elsewhere. Paintings, triptychs, silver church vessels, and a reliquary purportedly containing the skull of King Stephen I of Hungary are part of the museum's rich collection.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
