Review of Dominican Monastery and Museum

Dubrovnik's Dominican Monastery may be one of the city's first multi-purpose construction projects. Besides its function as a home for a 14th-century Dominican congregation, it was positioned against the city wall to strengthen the ramparts' northeastern flank. The monastery is off a narrow passageway behind the Sponza Palace. An impressive stairway leads to the church doorway, which is decorated with a statue of St. Dominic; the door opens to the 15th-century Gothic cloister designed by Maso di Bartolomeo. The monastery's rooms circle the cloister, whose graceful triple arches frame a garden heady with Mediterranean plantings; and an ancient well lies in the center. But architecture aside, the real reason to visit is the museum, which holds religious art from Dubrovnik and elsewhere. Paintings, triptychs, church vessels, and a reliquary purportedly containing the skull of King Stephen I of Hungary are part of the museum's rich collection.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
