Jewish Synagogue

Europe's second oldest Judaic house of worship is off the Stradun and north up a steep street and staircase on Zudioska Ulica (Jews' St.). The synagogue is on the second floor of a town house given by the city government to the Jewish community: first, those who fled persecution in Spain during the late 15th century; and later, in the early 16th century, Jews from Italy. A small museum chronicles the Jewish community in Dubrovnik and holds an ancient Torah brought to Dubrovnik by the city's first Jewish residents.

Tip: Dubrovnik Walking Tours offers a guided walk through the Old Jewish Quarter every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday at 11:30am. Meet 10 minutes before the start of the tour at the large Onofrio's Fountain. The tour focuses on the history of Jews in Dubrovnik, and the cost is 90kn per person. It lasts about an hour.
