The Wit's End Guest Ranch & Resort Review

A delightful dude ranch some 24 miles northeast of Durango at 8,000 feet elevation, the Wit's End is located on 550 acres in a narrow valley at the head of Vallecito Lake. Surrounded by the 12,000- to 14,000-foot peaks of the Weminuche Wilderness, the Wit's End offers a unique combination of rustic outdoors and sophisticated luxury, with numerous activities ranging from guided horseback rides and boating to a summer kids' program. The one- to four-bedroom log cabins, some dating from the 1870s, have retained their rustic outer appearance, but the knotty-pine interiors have been fully renovated. All have stone fireplaces, queen beds, full bathrooms with tub/shower combos, robes, porches (with porch swings), and striking views. Most meals are served in the beautiful 1870s log lodge with a huge stone fireplace. Filet mignon, roast duckling, and other hearty dishes are served, with fine dining 3 evenings each week and outdoor Western cookouts the other nights.

Facilities: Restaurant (Western/American); bar; large outdoor pool (summer only); 2 outdoor tennis courts; exercise room; spa; mountain biking; extensive summer children's program for ages 4-17; game room; airport transportation; limited room service; horseback riding (private lessons available); fishing (Orvis-endorsed instruction available); hiking; boating; trap shooting; winter-sports equipment.

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
