Stora Museum

Thinking about mining as a career? After seeing the harsh conditions under which workers labored, you'll think twice. This museum is devoted to the technical and industrial past of the area, and depicts the history of its copper mountain. We're most drawn to the model room with Christopher Polhem's clever inventions. Polhem (1661-1751) was the father of Swedish mechanics and loved using devices such as mechanical alphabets. Entering this museum is like a step into the 18th century; the tiled stoves, antiques, decorative molded plaster, and chandeliers all are of the era -- either the genuine article or an exact replica. In the coin cabinet, the entire history of minting copper coins is documented. Various methods of producing iron are described in pictures and models.
