Nightlife

What Bourbon Street is to New Orleans, Rua do Prior is to Faro. In the heart of town, adjacent to the Faro Hotel, it's chockablock with dozens of night cafes, pubs (English and otherwise), and dance clubs that rock from around 10:30pm until dawn. Head to this street anytime after noon for insights into the hard-drinking, hard-driving nature of this hot southern town. Our favorite watering hole along this street is CheSsenta Bar, Rua do Prior 34 (tel. 918/74-58-37), where the crowd is in their 20s and 30s, and downs one beer after another at 1.50€ a mug. It's open daily 10pm to 4am. Karaoke on Wednesday and Friday often rules the night at O Conselheiro, in the center of Rua Conselheiro Bívar (no phone). The best recorded music in town is played here by a DJ, and sometimes the bar converts to a dance floor. It too is open daily 10pm to 4am, and charges the same for beer.
