No one would expect a middle-class orphan, raised by a governess, to be one of the greatest art collectors of all time, but that is exactly what Josef Mueller (1887-1977) did. By the age of 31, Mueller had seven works by Cézanne, five by Matisse, five by Renoir, and a healthy assortment of Picassos and Braques, all of which are on display. However, the real heart of his collection are the primitive pieces from Africa, the East Indies, Oceania, the early Americas, tribal Asia, and the prehistoric phases of Greece, Italy, and Japan. Mueller's daughter Monique, a historian, married another art collector, Jean Paul Barbier, who added his discoveries to that of his father-in-law's, and together the pair created the Musée Barbier-Mueller.
